What AI SEO means
AI SEO is used to describe two related activities: using AI to assist with search work, and improving a website for discovery in AI-assisted search. The first concerns how work is done. The second concerns where people encounter information. A business can use either approach, both, or neither without changing the need for a useful website.
For a small business, begin with a simpler question: can a prospective customer find an accurate explanation of your service and act on it? A generated article, a citation in an answer, and a qualified enquiry are three different things. A sensible plan keeps those differences visible.
Start with the pages customers actually need
List your real services, the questions people ask before buying, and the pages that answer those questions. Give each important intent a clear home. Someone comparing approaches needs an explanation; someone seeking an implementation partner needs scope, fit, and a next step.
Avoid creating separate pages for every wording variation. If two phrases describe the same question, one well-organized page may serve both. Separate a service page from a guide when their purposes are genuinely different, then connect them with a descriptive link.
- List the services you can actually deliver.
- Collect questions from real customer conversations.
- Choose one page to own each distinct topic.
- Connect educational explanations to the relevant service.
Check access before adding more content
Before expanding a page, confirm that it can be reached and read. Review the initial page response, relevant indexing settings, and the path from the rest of the website. Inspect the actual page instead of assuming that a correct-looking screen means every technical requirement has been met.
Google says its AI search features use the same core search foundations; there is no separate special markup required for inclusion. Its documentation is linked below. This does not guarantee that a page will appear, so avoid commissioning a supposed shortcut based on a promised citation.
For internal navigation, use meaningful link text and real links. A reader should know whether the destination is a service description, a practical guide, or a contact form. This is useful even before considering how a search system interprets the page.
Use AI to assist, then verify
AI can help organize notes, suggest questions, or compare a draft against an outline. It should not become the source of truth for business facts. Keep an approved reference for services, limits, locations, pricing, and any evidence you plan to publish.
Review generated copy sentence by sentence where it makes a claim. Remove invented credentials, exaggerated outcomes, and unsupported comparisons. If a paragraph says something specific happened, there should be a real source for that statement.
A productive editing question is: what can the reader now decide that they could not decide before? If the answer is unclear, adding more paragraphs is unlikely to solve the problem.
Example: improve a page without inventing facts
Consider a fictional business with three approved facts: it designs small business websites, it includes service-page planning, and prospects can submit an enquiry. The following example uses only those facts. It is a writing exercise, not a measured client result.
| Element | Before | After | Why it helps |
|---|---|---|---|
| Headline | Digital solutions for your success | Website design for small businesses | Names the actual service and audience. |
| Scope | We help you grow online | Plan the service pages your customers need before design begins. | Explains a specific part of the scope. |
| Next step | Learn more | Tell us about the website you need. | Makes the enquiry action understandable. |
| Evidence | No evidence supplied | No invented result or endorsement added | Preserves accuracy while improving clarity. |
Measure visibility and business outcomes separately
Build a measurement plan before rewriting many pages. Record which page changed, what changed, when it changed, and the question the change was intended to answer. This record makes later observations easier to interpret.
Track discovery, website behavior, and enquiry quality as related but separate layers. An impression means someone may have encountered a search result. A visit means someone reached the site. An enquiry means someone took a contact action. A qualified opportunity depends on your own fit criteria.
Do not attribute every movement to an AI SEO edit. Demand, seasonality, other website changes, and external systems can change at the same time. Use the evidence to decide what to investigate next.
A useful first review
Choose one important service page and one guide that supports it. Check the facts, the main answer, the link between them, and the enquiry path. Ask a person unfamiliar with the business to explain what the service includes and what happens after contacting you.
When the content is accurate and the path is clear, record any remaining technical or measurement work with an owner and a verification step. A small set of completed, checked improvements is easier to learn from than a large collection of unreviewed drafts.
- Can the reader understand the offer without decoding jargon?
- Does the page answer the intent it was written for?
- Are specific claims supported by approved information?
- Does the relevant guide lead to a service decision?
- Does the contact action reach a monitored destination?
